REASON – Robotic Exploration and Autonomous Systems for Operational Navigation in Disaster Zones is a €5 million Horizon Europe project (CL5-2025-DRS-04) focused on redefining how disaster response is carried out in complex and high-risk environments. The project, which achieved a perfect evaluation score of 100% in a highly competitive call, brings together leading organisations across Europe to develop next-generation solutions for crisis management.

At its core, REASON explores how autonomous drones, ground robots, and artificial intelligence can support first responders by providing real-time situational awareness, faster decision-making, and safer operational capabilities in disaster zones. The aim is not only to enhance technological performance, but also to make response efforts more effective, coordinated, and resilient.

A defining aspect of the project is its strong grounding in real-world challenges. In particular, Ukraine plays a central role, with several Ukrainian partners and entrepreneurs actively contributing to the development and implementation of the solutions, while receiving substantial support. This ensures that innovation is directly aligned with urgent needs on the ground.

By combining cutting-edge research with practical application, REASON contributes to a future where advanced technologies strengthen disaster resilience, support emergency services, and ultimately help protect lives and communities.
